Three Comet-Owned Businesses to Support on Small Business Saturday
If you’re looking to get a head start on holiday shopping, you can support Comet-owned businesses and cross a few names off of your list by shopping small on Small Business Saturday.
Detour Doughnuts and Coffee
Cookies and cream, dirty chai, pecan pie and pumpkin cream cheese. At Detour Doughnuts and Coffee in Frisco, you’ll find flavorful creations made by Jinny Cho BS’16, a biomedical engineering graduate who took over her parents’ doughnut shop to design and create one-of-a-kind treats for customers. Cho makes more than just doughnuts, however. She also makes custom pastries and themed doughnuts for weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries and other special occasions. Her designs will stop you in your tracks, and the seasonal flavors will keep you coming back for more. Detour Doughnuts and Coffee is open Tuesday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Friday through Sunday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Rakkasan Tea Company
Sample flavors of Asian and Middle Eastern teas from your own backyard thanks to Brandon Friedman MPA’06, founder of Rakkasan Tea Company in Deep Ellum. As an infantry officer who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, Friedman found purpose in familiarizing Americans with other cultures through tea. At Rakkasan, you can not only enjoy tea from unlikely places such as Nepal, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, but also learn about the countries it came from. Sampler packs are available online from $24, or you can order Tea-by-Type Packs starting at $28.
Enchanted Rose Floral Co.
After a career change from aspiring medical doctor to full-time mom, Emily Chrastka BS’16 realized her artistic talent and opened up the Enchanted Rose Floral Company in 2018. The long-lasting, environmentally friendly floral arrangements are made from sustainable wood byproducts that are sourced from Southeast Asia. You can have your arrangements customized or replicate arrangements from special occasions so that you can forever cherish that moment. Chrastka’s demanding schedule at UT Dallas and her service as a combat medic in the U.S. Army prepared her to be focused, and, because of this, turnaround time in receiving your arrangements is a mere one to three weeks.
