Economists study how people make choices in life in response to the incentives and tradeoffs that they face. Economics is a broad-ranging discipline that examines all types of markets, industrial and labor organizations, the distribution of income and ownership rights, governmental activities, and political and economic philosophies. Our faculty includes economists who have acquired national and international reputations, received many grants and awards, and served as members of the editorial boards of a number of highly respected academic journals such as the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization and Defence and Peace Economics.
Economics degrees lead to careers in research and higher education, corporations, government, labor, and regional and urban planning services. An economics degree is considered excellent preparation for law school or pursuing an MBA. As a group, economics majors are known to score the highest on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) and compose the highest percentage of majors who are CEOs in the Fortune 500. Our graduate students staff the Econ Lab in GR 3.416 (Galveston Room) to assist students who need help with undergraduate economics classes.
