Supercharge Your Summer with Library Workshops and Tours


With summer 2019 in full swing, the Eugene McDermott Library has just the thing for students looking for the latest tips, resources and support to help them achieve academic success.

McDermott librarians host a suite of regularly scheduled workshops on specific topics as well as tours of the library and more in-depth instruction. Whether you need some help getting started with your research, you want to learn how to invest your money or you just need a point in the right direction to find books for your classes or research, the library is your place. There is something for everyone at the McDermott Library.

 

Library Workshops, Events and Tours


  • Get the Book! How to find the books you need
    Monday, July 1 – 11 a.m. to noon
    Location: MC 1.204

    It’s common to get frustrated trying to track down all the books you need for class and research… not to mention the cost! In this workshop, we will help you figure out what books you need and find them in the McDermott Library or other area libraries. You’ll also get an introduction to TexShare and Interlibrary Loan to help you get books and materials from outside libraries for free.

  • Navigating the Shelves: LC Call Numbers
    Wednesday, July 10 – 1 to 2 p.m.
    Location: MC 1.204

    So you found the book in the Library Catalog and got a call number… now what? Learn just what exactly all those letters and numbers on the side of library books mean so you can find books easily.

  • Feed the Pig: Saving and Investing Resources
    Thursday, July 11 – 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
    Location: MC 1.204

    Learn about all of the many resources at McDermott Library for personal finance. Learn surprising facts about investing and saving and try your luck at winning a savings bank in the shape of a pig.

  • Coffee Hour! Meet Your Librarians
    Wednesday, July 17 – 10:30 a.m. to noon
    Location: MC 1.204

    Join your librarians for a cup of coffee and friendly chat. These informal gatherings are a chance for students, staff, and librarians to get to know one another in a relaxed gathering. Coffee is on us, you just bring your friendly faces and any questions you might have about library research, library services or library collections.

  • Discover the Library
    Thursday, July 25 – 11 a.m. to noon
    Location: MC 2.524

    Discover is the single biggest search option at McDermott Library, which can get you started finding articles, books, DVDs, streaming media, and tons of other formats. If you don’t know where to look or what you need yet, Discover can get you started!

  • Streaming Movies for Fun and Learning
    Monday, Aug. 5 – 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    Location: MC 2.524

    Get an introduction to several of the many multimedia resources at McDermott Library to watching favorite films or learning a marketable skill.

  • OverDrive: eBooks and Audio on the Go!
    Friday, Aug. 16 – 11 a.m. to noon
    Location: MC 2.524

    Learn about OverDrive, a phone and tablet-friendly service for fans of reading for pleasure, bestsellers and audiobooks. BYOD (bring your own device) to get OverDrive set up on your favorite gadget.
