Work on Campus Enhancement Project’s Next Phase Shifts into High Gear
Construction Will Close Some Pedestrian Areas Throughout Spring Semester

Students returning in person for the spring semester at The University of Texas at Dallas will find a labyrinth of sidewalk and street closures to accommodate progress on the third phase of the Campus Landscape Enhancement project.

Outside the new Sciences Building, students will be able to enjoy the new pedestrian-only section of Rutford Avenue now completed near North Loop Road. A right turn lane from Rutford Avenue onto Synergy Park Boulevard has been added to ease traffic flow.

Elsewhere, the enhancement project will affect roads, sidewalks and surrounding areas across campus throughout the spring semester.

The third phase of the Campus Landscape Enhancement project includes turning Rutford Avenue into a 24-foot-wide promenade for pedestrians. Much of the construction on the north section of Rutford from near North Loop Road to Synergy Park Boulevard has been completed, and the project remains on the path planners envisioned for the area.

“We are taking advantage of a smaller in-person student, faculty and staff population on campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic while many are taking classes and working remotely. We are able to complete a significant portion of our landscape enhancement plan without disrupting the usual campus traffic,” said Dr. Calvin Jamison, vice president for facilities and economic development. “These enhancements will greatly enrich the continually expanding physical campus for the UT Dallas community to enjoy by fall 2021.”

On the north side of campus, sidewalks will be closed through February east of the Bioengineering and Sciences Building and the Natural Science and Engineering Research Lab. This will also affect the west side of Callier Center Richardson and the Callier Center Richardson Addition. A temporary sidewalk will connect the Callier Center building’s south entrance to North Loop Road.

Vehicular access on Rutford Avenue will be restricted south of North Loop Road as progress continues in transforming that street into a pedestrian-only area. Rutford Avenue from Lloyd V. Berkner Hall to Franklyn Jenifer Drive will be closed through May. A pedestrian path crossing Rutford Avenue on the north end of the construction zone is open.

Construction crews are turning their attention to the south section of Rutford from Lloyd V. Berkner Hall to Franklyn Jenifer Drive, which will be closed through May. The rendering shows what the finished section will look like. See the map for more closure details.

On the east side of campus, sidewalks around Cecil H. Green Hall will be closed in three phases through the end of May. Wayfinding signage will indicate entrances that will be open to the building.

In addition, as a part of the third phase of the Campus Landscape Enhancement project, new entry signs will be visible on the fringe of the campus.
